So as the price of petroleum soars, sending the costs of everything else skyward, perhaps it is time for the United States to begin reducing the total amount of money we pour into other nations and reduce our total contribution to the United Nations. The fed could take that outlay and reduce our individual tax burden and subsidize the soaring fuel costs (particularly in the northeast). I keep reading how we should be thankful that we don't pay what other nations pay for fuel...the US is not othe… Continue

Although I am approaching my fourth year as an educator, I have worked in the educational field for the last thirteen. Prior to teaching I was a school secretary. I believe this has provided me with great insight to all the functions and operations of a school community. As a professional, who desires to be a proactive school community member, this is a quality asset to possess.
I love working with children, helping them discover, name, and build on their understandings of the world around them… Continue

I am hoping to connect with music technology teachers, and set up a iChat to discuss compositions we have created. This summer has been so exciting and ready to start the year with a bang. I have a main website www.carolbroos.com and also a main blog site www.eagles.edublog.org Continue
This week I'm writing a series on technology and "The Achievement Gap"
on my social desktop. This is the third part of the series which takes
concepts introduced by "'The Achievement Gap' and culture", and
distinguishes between established methods for addressing the problem
and making real changes. In my last article I promised to go more into
technology, but it seems that the problem I'm addressing needs more
distinction at this time.
Administrators and educators in the United States are faced with
balancing federal mandates like the "No Child Left Behind Act" and
state concerns like closing "The Ac… Continue

This week I'm writing a series on technology and "The Achievement Gap" on my social desktop.
This is the first part of the series which introduces the concept of
"The Achievement Gap" and some methods high level administrators are
using to combat the problem.
"The Achievement Gap" is a theory that observes educational performance
of children in the United States in public K-12 schools. The founda… Continue

There does seem to be some evidence that shows US schools are starting to lose competitive edge internationally.
"A
swiftly rising number of American workers at every skill level are in
direct competition with workers in every corner of the globe. While our
international counterparts are increasingly getting more education,
their young people are getting a better education as well. American
students and young adults place anywhere from the middle to the bottom
of the pack in all three… Continue

I'm working to promote international collaborations between educators.
Over the last week I've put up a sight where educators can register for
what I've been calling the International Educators Collaborative.
It's still a little vague what that means because the more I talk to
educators about it the more the idea starts shift and come into greater
focus. My real purpose is to establish a means for educators to use the
web in a somewhat standard way that… Continue

I want to write a little bit more about the database I've put online
for educators that want to collaborate directly with other classrooms.
I got the idea from interacting with teachers on ning. I've been
trying to contact as many teachers as possible through many networks
and it dawned on me that I'm making connections that a lot of educators
need but can't make on their own because they don't have the time. I
also noticed that a database of these people doesn't exist anywhere
yet. S… Continue

I think the biggest disconnect between teachers and technology comes
when a technological
medium requires too much time to understand or maintain. That's
probably part of the enthusiasm behind social networking; you have a
profile page that says who you are and then you can go about
communicating with people who are online in real time. It's simple and
requires no technological knowledge or understanding.
Applications which are in some ways like ning will
be best for educators, as… Continue

The I-Teams from two school districts and I just spent two days working with various Web 2.0 resources and talking about our roles in helping our schools' staffs integrate technology to increase learning. We focused these two days on learning for ourselves. One of the things we've decided to do is use the TeachStrong.org site as our experiment in virtual learning as a team. We are a WAN (wide-area network) of sorts; teachers, media specialists and administrators from different schools shari… Continue

I've spent the past few days learning Content Enhancement Routines and Learning Strategies. These are great for helping students master critical content in the classroom! Now, my challenge is to pull in Student Centered Learning in addition to these routines and strategies. In the LoTi Workshops we discuss Content, Process, and Product and how technology relates to these concepts. Technology can be the key for all of these in helping to make a classroom more student centered! How do you promote… Continue
