An Online Professional Learning Community for Educators

OK, I have a class website that I have not used/advertised yet, I want to run it by my administrator first...
But I was thinking about how a great deal of students - specifically middleschoolers - are on sites like myspace and thought it would be great if there were a cool and SAFE site for teachers to create class webpages for their class which would include an open dialogue (blogging???) I figure this would be a great way for them to ask and answer questions. I could get into the discussion as well.

I thought about creating a myspace account for this very reason but technically, the terms of agreement said the users need to be 14. My students are not all 14. It wouldn't be equitable. Also, I know that many students are involved in some inappropriate behavior online and I wouldn't want to be liable if I saw anything like that on there - it might lead to negligence on my part. (Right?) So, any ideas?

Tana!
Thank you so much!!! This is so helpful to me and I have already invited a friend of mine and plan to spread the word tot he technology cohort that i am for my NCLB New Teacher Induction Program of which this is my first year!
#1 - I wonder, since my myspace picture (my little "teacher's pet" ...woof!)was automatically posted in my automatically joined webspace: is this somehow linked to myspace?
#2 - Also, is this a relatively new site? I noticed that there aren't that many members... unless I am looking in the wrong places. This is definitely the myspace of teachers!
Thanks! Vanessa

There's a great blogging tool especially for educators, called edublogs. Have a look at my blog. At our school we have talked to our kids a lot about cybersafety. Quite a few of them (shockingly, as they're only Primary school age) have Bebo pages. We have chosen to inform and empower them, rather than try to ban online socialising. My class blog is a tool for showcasing my student's writing and their artwork. We would love a comment from 'overseas people'!

We are also in the process of getting our wiki up and running. Eventually it will be a kind of filing system for our published work, photos and forums. Wetpaint seems to be the nicest wikispace to use. You can ask for advertisements to be removed if you let them know that it is an educational website. I also like Teacherlingo. Have a look!
