Our school uses a program called "Web Sense". Our computer tech guy blocks specific topics and specific websites.. For instance.. if we try to go to a website that is in forum format, it will be blocked chances are.. (though not all are) and a page will come up saying that websense has blocked the site due to it being a forum or chat.. They have things like dating, chat, etc blocked and specific domains are blocked, like MySpace and Facebook. The topic "proxy filtering" is also blocked.. because kids were finding ways around the websense.
We are filtered pretty tightly. .. not enough so sometimes because there are still sites that I have to tell my students to get out of.. but if we had it much tighter, we'd have a problem with sites we DO want being difficult to get to..
This year I finally persuaded my principal to allow me to have a management system (by Geneva Logic) in my room too.. which allows me to have all the computers in my room on my screen and I can monitor specific computers and remote to their computers and close down things the kids have opened and refuse to close upon my verbal instruction (like mindless videos etc) or open programs for them if they are procrastinating with their work or send direct messages to a particular student. I can also give a lesson to the entire classroom by having my screen on their monitors and force all to watch same thing at same time.. a cool way to show an instructional video or demonstrate how to operate a specific piece of software.
